Regent Farm Road: Essential maintenance or missed opportunity?

Resurfacing works on Regent Farm Road are due to take place overnight between 19 Jan 2026 and 19 Apr 2026.

Regent Farm Road is due to be resurfaced at a cost of £260,000. What if, instead of simply replacing the current road surface, the Council took the opportunity to make some improvements?

We have written about Regent Farm Road before in our blogs Regent Centre (2019), and Eagle Star House (2017).  The main feature of our proposal was to create a new green-space by linking the 55m wide centre circle of the Regent Centre roundabout to Gosforth pool and gym. This could be used for a mini-play park, an outdoor gym, or simply left as open green space.

The remaining road on the roundabout would become two-way allowing access by car to and from the swimming pool car park.

We wrote to the Council on 5 October to set out the benefits of doing this as part of the resurfacing works.

  • The large green space on the roundabout becomes connected to the pool and library and made useable for local residents.
  • A financial saving from not having to resurface the south east corner of the roundabout offsets costs of moving traffic islands.
  • Single lanes (one each way on roundabout) slow traffic and prevent dangerous overtaking on the roundabout (as happens now).
  • It would discourage through traffic from Regent Centre using Regent Farm Road to avoid the no right turn at Salters Road / Gosforth High Street lights.
  • Existing pavements remain usable.
  • No loss of amenity for drivers.
  • Cyclists benefit from a traffic-free short cut from Regent Farm Road (E) to Regent Road North.

Since 2019, local offices have been converted into flats so the need for nearby green space, and safe walking/cycling routes, is even greater now.

At the time of writing we had not received a reply.

Longer Term

Longer term, the volume of traffic on Regent Farm Road and Regent Road North needs to be addressed. This is a busy area with multiple destinations for children including the pool, library and St Charles Primary school. In 2019, the Council installed traffic counters on Regent Farm Road showing over 6,000 vehicles a day using this road, including an average of 750 vehicles between 8am and 9am on weekday mornings just when children are arriving at school. Of these vehicles, half were exceeding the speed limit, making it more dangerous to walk and entirely unsuitable for children to cycle to any of these locations.

this is an excellent idea. I would also add that the current SE corner of the roundabout could be used as a cycle path to allow easy access from Regent Road to the pool/gym (and vice versa)

Excellent plan. Please keep pushing for this. Do local flat dwellers and house owners know about this proposal. Happy to help with old school leafleting if needed.
