This is our seventh annual blog sharing local media stories about people killed or injured in road traffic collisions in Newcastle upon Tyne in 2025. In 2025 there were 3 fatalities, 114 serious injuries and 414 slight injuries on Newcastle’s roads, an average of 10 people injured every week.
In the seven local authorities making up the NE Mayoral region, there were 54 deaths and 648 serious injuries in 2025. SPACE for Gosforth submitted a Freedom of Information request to the NE Combined Authority (NECA) in November 2025 asking for road traffic injury KPI outcomes for 2023 and 2024, and the anticipated date for the first NECA KPI Evaluation Report. NECA responded in December 2025 saying that no outcomes or report had been produced but they are “committed to undertaking annual monitoring and evaluation of [NECA’s] performance against Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) which will be publicly accessible via [NECA’s] website.”
Data on injuries from road traffic collisions is taken from the NE Road User Casualty website.
The Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS) also publishes collision information by parliamentary constituency, including data on what vehicles collided with the injured person.
We want to express our thanks to everyone who is working towards making NE roads safer, and to media and other organisations continuing to highlight the terrible toll of road traffic collisions in our region.

A driver who was travelling at more than double the speed limit and caused the death of a teenage cyclist has been jailed. Jayden McGuinness, 16, suffered serious injuries on Walker Road in Newcastle on 27 September [2024], and died in hospital two days later. Ryan Elsender, who left the scene immediately afterwards, was later arrested and charged with causing death by dangerous driving. – 21 February 2025

A man is due in court accused with dangerous driving after seven police officers were injured in a crash on the A1. The 20-year-old has been charged with dangerous driving, two counts of failing to stop a motor vehicle when required by a constable, two counts of no insurance use, and two counts of driving otherwise than in accordance with licence in connection with the collision, which happened near Gateshead early on Wednesday April 9. Collision on Church Road Gosforth
Three teens arrested on suspicion of theft as police cars damaged in pursuit. Three teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of theft after a police pursuit. The three boys, aged 16 and 17, were arrested in Gosforth; despite the dangerous driving first being reported in the Goathland Avenue area of Longbenton. An eyewitness reported two police cars colliding on Church Road, and the alleged stolen vehicle crashing into traffic lights at the junction of Church Road and Alwinton Terrace. Police cars were seen being taken away from Church Road in Gosforth on recovery trucks following the incident. – 24 June 2025
